Introducing the members of the Independent Peer Review Panel...
January 5, 2007
The Independent Peer Review Panel (IPRP) is comprised of 9 members with expertise in various areas related to mine closure. The panel first met in October 2006 at Faro and is tasked with the following:
1. assessing the engineering adequacy of the reclamation alternatives,
2. determining whether all rational and viable measures have been identified, and
3. identifying any information gaps and the need for any additional work.
The 9 members are:
Terry Mudder, Ph.D. (co-owner of Times Limited, an environmental science and engineering consulting firm located in Sheridan, Wyoming) is the Chair of the IPRP. Dr. Mudder is an organic and analytical chemist, engineer and environmental scientist primarily focused on the mining industry.
R. Anthony Hodge, Ph.D. (Anthony Hodge Consultants Inc.) is a Geological Engineer focusing on mining and sustainable development, and groundwater hydrogeology.
Ken Raven, M.Sc. (INTERA Engineering Ltd. in Ottawa) is a hydrogeologist with expertise in fractured rock hydrogeology, geochemistry, aqueous geochemistry, and conceptual modeling.
Leslie Smith, Ph.D. is a Professor and Cominco Chair in Minerals and the Environment with University of British Columbia with expertise in hydrogeological analysis and groundwater contamination.
Randy Knapp, B.A.Sc. (SENES Consultants Limited, Ontario) focuses on mining and industrial wastes with expertise in acid rock drainage (ARD), mine closure, effluent treatment, and environmental auditing.
Andrew M. Robertson, Ph.D. (Robertson GeoConsultants Inc.) provides geotechnical and environmental engineering consulting on a wide range of mining projects with expertise in environmental engineering, risk and liability assessments, tailings dam design, mine waste management, acid rock drainage and geochemistry, environmental liability assessments, and mine closure plan development.
William (Bill) A. Price, Ph.D. (CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Smithers, BC) is a Research Scientist with expertise in environmental management, mine reclamation, ARD, and soils & revegetation.
Laurie Chan, Ph.D. (TreeFrog Research Corporation and Professor of Community Health, University of Northern BC) is an analytical chemist focusing on nutrition and environment of Indigenous Peoples with expertise in environmental and nutritional toxicology, and risk assessment.
Ken Froese, Ph.D. (Golder Associates Ltd., Calgary, Alberta) is an analytical chemist, environment toxicologist and risk assessor with a very strong background in exposure and risk assessment, field sampling and analytical program design and chemical data quality assessment.
Together, the IPRP has over 230 years experience in mine closure activities and is conducting a rigorous review of the proposed alternatives for the Faro mine site.
